Veneers are a durable, natural-looking way to correct a variety of dental issues with one, long-lasting treatment. But while they are both safe and effective, this treatment is considered irreversible. Though your veneers can last up to 20 years with proper care and maintenance, you will need to commit to replacing them as needed. Here’s what you should know about this innovative treatment and your oral health!

What are Veneers?

Veneers are thin porcelain shells that fit over your healthy teeth to improve a variety of cosmetic issues, including their size, color, shape, and even minor spacing issues. With proper care and maintenance, you can expect them to last for decades, but even the most pampered veneers will need to be replaced eventually.

Tooth Enamel Removal

To attach your veneers, your dentist will need to remove a very small amount (about 0.5mm) of tooth enamel from each treated tooth so it fits properly. Thankfully, this is not painful, but it is irreversible, as your enamel will not grow back. It is because of this that you must commit to having veneers on your teeth to keep them protected from damage and decay.

Caring for Veneers

Though you’ll eventually need to get new veneers, you can greatly extend their life by properly using and caring for them. Here are some best practices:

  • Brush your teeth twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or gel. Because your veneers do not have pores, whitening toothpastes will not work on them, and gritty pastes can scratch them.
  • Floss between each tooth daily, whether they have veneers or not.
  • Don’t use your teeth as tools: no using them to bite your fingernails, or to tear open packaging.
  • Don’t eat anything excessively crunchy or hard with them, such as ice cubes or hard candy.
  • Be sure to visit your dentist for your biannual exam and cleaning appointments.

Remember, your veneers can fix myriad dental flaws in one convenient treatment, but before you sign on the dotted line, understand that they are a lifelong commitment. With proper care and usage, you’ll be enjoying your new veneers for decades!
