How Do All-on-4 Implants Work?
Like regular dental implant procedures, All-on-4 involves inserting dental implant posts into your jaw so that they can serve as a sturdy foundation for replacement teeth. What makes All-on-4 different, however, is that only four implant posts are required, and the two in the back are placed at an angle so that they can join with the parts of the jaw where bone density is highest. The implant posts will ultimately be used to support a completely personalized full denture.
Am I a Candidate for All-on-4 Implants?
You may be a viable candidate for All-on-4 if:
- You are an adult with a fully developed jawbone.
- All or most of the teeth in your upper or lower jaw have been lost.
- You have a healthy mouth that isn’t currently suffering from gum disease.
It’s worth noting that compared to other dental implant procedures, All-on-4 doesn’t require as much jawbone density. It’s therefore less likely that you will need to undergo bone grafting in order to be considered an All-on-4 candidate.
Benefits of All-on-4 Implants
There are many benefits to attaching a denture to four dental implants. For one thing, the implant posts will provide additional stability and chewing power, meaning you’ll be able to eat all kinds of foods again. On top of that, you will be able to take care of your new teeth as if they were a natural part of your mouth (meaning you can brush and floss them). Finally, the implant posts will provide the stimulation necessary to stop bone loss in the jaw.
All-On-4 vs. Traditional Implants
There are a few key differences between All-on-4 and traditional dental implant placement that you should be aware of before making any commitments:
- All-on-4 can reduce the number of implant posts needed to replace all of your teeth. With the traditional method, around six or even eight implant posts may be required to do the same job.
- All-on-4 may allow you to avoid bone grafting thanks to the fact that it doesn’t call for as much bone density. This can make the overall process significantly shorter.
- Finally, All-on-4 often allows you to receive a temporary denture during the same appointment that your dental implant posts are placed, meaning you won’t have to go without teeth.
